SAFETY INDUCTION

Introduction

Further to the General Induction training required for all medical workers, we provide this medical/safety induction for all workers, GPs and Nursing and contractors as part of your induction.

Medical Safety Requirements

All workers must follow the WHS Safety:

  • All workers must have a completed safety induction

  • No Swearing, Rude hand gestures, or demeaning comments in the workplace.

  • PPE Must be worn on site as per NSW Health requirements and at a minimum;

– Mask as required and if interacting with vulnerable patients

-Gloves as required

Competency

  • All workers must be competent in the tasks they are undertaking.
  • Training and Assessment will be carried out on key medical practices prior to staff carrying out procedures with patients.
  • Adequate supervision must be provided to ensure compliance with company procedures.

Licensing & Qualifications

Professional Staff are required to provide updated copies of the following documents to maintain accreditation standards and these are to be made available to the Practice Manager annually

  • Doctors we require – AHPRA registration, a copy of the Professional Indemnity Insurance certificate and a CPD summary.
  • Nurses we require – AHPRA registration

COVID Safety

As per NSW Health Guidelines: If you have cold or flu-like symptoms such as a cough, fever, sore throat or runny nose please stay at home and don’t attend the medical centre for at least seven days, and then ensure you have a negative RAT before visiting

COVID Safety Practices should occur:

  • Staff should regularly clean their equipment

  • Do not shake hands with staff, patients & visitors

  • Wear a mask if not able to socially distance from others

  • Keep 1.5 metres distance from others

SWMS "Safe Work Method Statements"

  • SWMS must be developed in consultation with relevant workers.
  • SWMS must comply with requirements of current WHS regulations.
  • Workers must comply with SWMS at all times.
  • SWMS must be available and accessible by all workers.
  • SWMS must be updated to reflect any changes and communicated to workers.
  • SWMS must be read, understood and signed by relevant workers.

Electrical Safety

  • All Electrical equipment must be inspected before use.
  • All electrical Equipment must be tested and tagged.
  • As per WHS Regulations and AS/NZS 3551:2012 – Safe Management of Medical Equipment Under this standard, staff need to make sure that all medical devices in the clinic are safe from defects that could cause electric shock. All staff need to verify the correct operation of the equipment’s safety functions, in the case of an electrical fault
  • All staff check before use that the equipment are in line with defined acceptance criteria from the standard and performing to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Only licensed electricians may work on energised electrical equipment and under strictly enforced SWMS where utilising suitable PPE and equipment.

Worker Responsibilities

  • All persons working in the medical centre must treat each other professionally.
  • Discrimination will not be tolerated.
  • Workplace bullying, sexual harassment, violence or practical jokes is not acceptable.
  • Workers must take reasonable care of their health and safety and ensure that their actions (or inactions) do not put others at risk.
  • Workers must comply with safe work practices, policies and procedures at this Practice.
  • Workers must participate in team meetings and safety meetings where possible.

Disposing of Medical Waste

  • All medical waste must be disposed of as per the NSW Health Guidelines. 
  • Waste in medical practices falls into one of these four categories:
  1. general
  2. clinical
  3. pharmaceutical
  4. digital.
  • Clinical waste must be placed into yellow biohazard bags and disposed of according to relevant state and territory legislation and regulations.Your waste must be correctly sorted and segregated before being disposed of.
  • Sharps containers must be:

    • located as close as possible to where the sharps are used (eg in consulting rooms)
    • out of reach of children
    • disposed of by an approved waste disposal firm (this is both a legislative and accreditation requirement).

Medical Equipment

  • Medical Equipment must be used for designated purpose and within manufacturer guidelines.
  • Operators must have required training and be “competent” before using machinery.
  • Pre-Start checks must be conducted before using certain Equipment is used each day.
  • PPE must be worn as per manufacturer recommendations.
  • Medical Equipment must be serviced as per manufacturers recommendations.
  • Medical Equipment must be registered with the Regulator where required.

Emergencies, Evacuation
& First Aid

  • Workers must report all Incidents and Injuries to the Practice Manager and complete an Incident form ASAP.
  • The Emergency Evacuation Procedures will be explained to you by your supervisor.
  • The evacuation point is marked in the Evacuation Procedure displayed at site.
  • Workers must know the location of First Aid Kits and Fire Extinguishers.
    Workers should call 000 in the event of an emergency.

Drugs & Alcohol

  • There is a ZERO tolerance for drug and Alcohol use on site.
  • You must not be under the influence of Drug or Alcohol while on this site..
  • Workers found to be under the influence of Drugs or Alcohol may be terminated.
  • Workers must report any suspicious activity to the HR Manager.
    You may not bring any recreational drugs or alcohol onto this site.
  • You may not bring any drugs or alcohol onto this site.

Hazardous Chemicals

  • MSDS – Safety Data sheets must be provided for all chemicals brought to site.
  • MSDS – must be current (less than 5 years and have Australian contact details)
  • All Chemical containers must be labelled.
  • PPE must be worn as per MSDS requirements.
  • Workers must be trained on the Chemicals they are handling.
  • A method for handling spills and cleaning must be available.

Health Standards

  • TBC.

Supervisor Notes

  • The Manager will now give you a tour of the offices.
  • The Supervisor will show you the First Aid and Fire Extinguisher location.
